I’m not sure if it’s only me, but I find the first three episodes of South Park season 15 unimpressive. I was expecting too much on episode 3 titled “Royal Pudding” but I only had few laughs and was left unsatisfied.

IGN: The opening with the kids and their little play was decent. I cracked a smile mainly because the cuteness just got to me. The kid voices are adorable. Then the scene shifted to little Ike being fixed to the TV as the Canadian Royal wedding was underway. The Canadian traditions were actually worth some laughs. The Captain Crunch being thrown instead of rice or confetti was cute, and then there was the pudding. The pudding was just so ridiculous I couldn’t help but laugh. But the comedy quickly wore out after the abduction. The mass Canadian suicides, the contents of the box of faith, the Canadian call to action…. It was all rather boring.

But, I am intrigued by the mushroom people of Nova Scotia.

Other weird parts of the episode included the ugly Canadian guy, the “giant”, and a host of Inuits (who are actually kind of cool). It has been said that episodes without Cartman are often the worst, and that’s certainly the case here. Ike and Mr. Mackey just can’t carry a story on their own.

While the Canadians were trying to save their princess from the giant, then the native Canadians, then the monster known as tooth decay, Mr. Mackey was continuing the school play, while addressing some daddy issues. Mackey’s antics were completely forgettable. I found this side story tiresome and mirthless (my new favorite phrase for South Park this season).

The ending was… well… what was that? The story went absolutely bonkers and ended with the prince of Canada sticking his new wife’s severed arm up his ass. There was no real comedy here. While I get that the show is poking fun at all the commentary and traditions of the Royal Wedding, there’s a fine line between “funny” ridiculous and “stupid” ridiculous, and I think South Park crossed that line here. A lot of this story was just randomness for its own sake, and it just wasn’t very entertaining. Besides that, there are tons of other topics ripe for satire that would have yielded far more interesting comedy.

Despite some funny points, overall, this episode was disappointing. That’s three stinkers in a row for this season, and I just don’t know what to say. I really thought this season would hold up, but it seems like there are some serious problems at South Park Studios. Maybe Trey and Matt really are burnt out between trying to do this show and The Book of Mormon on Broadway simultaneously. Maybe they really were pissed about last year’s censorship of “201” and are just going through the motions to fulfill their contract. Whatever the cause may be, it’s clear that something is awfully wrong with this show right now.

I hope South Park will bounce back soon. I still believe that it can do.
