With several big stars already booked, let’s check American Horror Story season 2’s new character, theme and setting.

What is season two’s theme?

The second season is about sanity. What makes someone sane or insane? Sometimes the people you think are insane are actually the most sane of all. It’s fun to write about people who society throws away.

The season two setting?

The 1960s.

Is it true that Chloë Sevigny is headed to season 2?

Yes. Sevigny plays a character who was put in an asylum because she was a nymphomaniac, so her husband sends her away. At the time, you were able to put people away for that. Another character is institutionalized for being a lesbian.

Here are some spoilers released about American Horror Story season 2. The spoilers mention the filming locations as well as the new era approach of the upcoming season.

“Season 2 is set on the East Coast at an institution for the criminally insane that is run by Jessica,” Murphy said Wednesday during a panel promoting the series at the TV Academy in North Hollywood.

Murphy had previously teased that a clue to the second season location could be found in AHS’ “Birth” episode and confirmed on Wednesday that the hint was “something that Sarah Paulson’s character, Billie Dean, says to Jessica and Taisa as she’s sage-ing the house and talking about places where evil collects: We talk about institutions and prisons and things like that. That was the clue.”

Now about the different world…

In addition to the East Coast institution for the criminally insane, the second season will also find the cast in a new era, Murphy said. “It’s a completely different world and has nothing to do with Season 1; there’s not a mention of Season 1,” he noted. “The second season is set in a completely different time period.”

Lizzie Brocheré is headed to American Horror Story to play a major role.

Lizzie will play Gia, a nemesis for Jessica Lange; network notices compared the young woman to Angelina Jolie’s dangerous manipulative character in Girl, Interrupted.

Known for NC-17 films in France, this will mark the 27-year old’s first American television gig.

Here is the latest scoop from American Horror Story season 2.

Sarah Paulson (the medium Billie Dean Howard), Evan Peters (Tate Langdon) and Lily Rabe (Nora Montgomery) will join Jessica Lange in the show’s second season.

Also participating in the scarefest will be Zachary Quinto, who played a gay man who previously owned the Harmon home (with Torchwood‘s Teddy Sears as Patrick). “Anybody could pop up at any time,” Murphy said during the panel hosted by EW’s Tim Stack. “It’s fun to take actors you love and say, ‘come play again.’”

Jessica Lange reprise her memorable role in the new season, which resumes production in late July for a mid-October return to FX. She’ll play someone entirely new, promises Murphy.

“We have designed the second season of American Horror Story completely around her character,” Murphy told EW exclusively. “Last year Jessica came in with Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott. This will really be the Jessica Lange show so I’m very excited about it. We are designing this amazing new opposite of the Constance character for her. She and I have spoken about different things. She has a lot of ideas, and has a lot of input into her character. She told me some things she has always wanted to play as an actress. She’s a great collaborator and a great friend.”

“I really sweated this negotiation,” continues Murphy, “so I’m glad she is firmly on board.”

Lange is not the only actor from season 1 who will return for a second year. Murphy said he signed three more, but won’t reveal their identities until Friday when he and the AHS cast members participate in the annual PaleyFest in Beverly Hills.

AHS season 2 will take place on the East Coast and will involve a horror institution.
