Want some cliffhangers on season finales? Well Eureka season 4 finale gave you one. “One Giant Leap” left us with more questions and we need to wait for season 5 next year for the answers.

TV Fanatic: My favorite geeky couple, Holly and Fargo, not only finally hooked up, but Fargo dropped the L-word and Holly replied with a big kiss and a butt squeeze! You go, Holly!

It was nice that Jo pointed out to Fargo that while he might not have gotten the job as Director in this time line, he certainly had grown into the role and was doing a great job.

Also, Allison decided to move in with Jack. I loved that Kevin’s only concern was if SARAH would clean his room. You just never know what kids are going to latch on to as the one big thing when you talk about life changes. I was thrilled Kevin wasn’t worried about Jack.

I really liked that Jo decided to go on a “walk-about” to find herself. The realization that everything you have been doing was to prove something to others is a tough one. We all must find ourselves in our own way. I’m excited to see where her character goes next season.

Finally, I was touched by the plaque that was neatly placed by the lake for R. Petrovicz. For those who don’t know, Petrovicz was a producer on Eureka and was co-executive producer on the episode (“Founders Day”) that opened season four.

To all the cast and crew of Eureka, I am truly sorry you lost a friend and family member and I’m honored to recognize the name and know what the plaque was for. It’s small things like this that make us miss you all so much. Just another example of why you don’t need any lame cliff-hangers.

We took “One Small Step” this week in preparation of the giant leap. What happened on episode 19 of Eureka?

TV Fanatic: Jack and Henry raced to stop parts of GD  from being melting this week, due to exposure from genetically altered bat guano.

Pop quiz: If you lived in Eureka, how long would it take you connect an exorbitant amount of poop on your car in the morning with returning and finding it melting just a couple of hours later? My wife and I put it together in about 45 seconds. Okay, I put it together in about 45 seconds. She only needed 35.

Given how Jack’s intelligence, I find it impossible he wouldn’t instantly have thought of the crap he found on car as a possible suspect for it melting. Especially since it happened when Taggart was around.

Don’t get me wrong, I was happy to see Taggart back in Eureka, I’ve missed him as a regular and always enjoy seeing Matt Frewer’s quirky characterback in the mix. But given that the last time we saw Taggart the entire town was shrinking, shouldn’t he have been the first suspect?

Of course, having genetically altered bats whose poop created an acid gave us no end of potty humor (sampled in our Eureka quotes section). If nothing else, hearing Jack yell “Holy crap, bat man!” made my inner-five-year-old giggle.

While I could ride along quietly with the idea of it taking the residents of Eureka (or should I say, Jack) a while to figure out that Taggart’s bats were involved with things melting, the plot I couldn’t get behind was the idea that Methane gas on Titan was corroding through Andy.

See, I remember from high school chemistry that Methane is not corrosive. Also, keep in mind they haven’t mentioned a concern with Methane dissolving any of their gear previously. Maybe Jaime Paglia and his team were trying to tie the two plots together by having items being dissolved/melted on Earth as they raced to prevent Andy from being melted/dissolved on Titan.

In reality, the biggest danger on Titan for machines is the cold. SARAH seemed to be the only one who figured it correctly when she mentioned that his skin was not built for the temperatures on Titan.

This does bring me to the redeeming quality of this episode: the adorable romance between Andy and SARAH. I enjoyed the delicately weaved story of one (or both) of them being on the verge of being destroyed and not getting to say goodbye to each other. It’s the stuff classic romance movies of; Andy and SARAH could have easily been Bogart and Hepburn.

Given that the first episode in July opened with Andy and SARAH about to tie the knot, but getting cold feet, it seemed appropriate to bring that full circle and have them both relay a message through Jack for the other one.

Lastly, I’m about read to throw in the towel on Jo and Zane. I can’t figure out which way they are heading. I thought they were becoming friends with benefits, then he was all mad about her dropping out so it looked like that indicated actual real emotions. Then, she says they are only friends and that is more than they were before. Huh?

Zane, can you just propose already so she knows how you really feel? If you can’t see that look in her eye that says she would move Heaven and Earth for you, you’re not as smart as I thought you were.

Definitely a tense episode for Eureka season 4 episode 18 titled “This One Time at Space Camp…” Luckily, we had some events which lighten the tension with a plethora of nerd and geek nods.

TV Fanatic: From working in a History of the World Part One quote to referencing Ghostbusters, this episode could have been titled “Hail to the Geek, Baby!”

I really enjoyed that we got to see how Dr. Parrish and Fargo started their rivalry as kids at Galaxy Camp, making rocket engines for Chief Tyrol. Okay, it was guest star Aaron Douglas as Ray Darlton, but, come on if anyone knows engines, it’s The Chief from Battlestar Galactica!

We also got the first view into Jo’s childhood. I was not surprised that she had three older brothers and was raised by her dad. Given that she can field strip an M16 with a blindfold on – and I can’t even do it after six years in the military – her childhood was totally what I expected… except for her father’s comment about her mom being proud of her. That hit me like a mallet in the chest Well done, Ms. Berg. Very well written.

My favorite scene was the slow pan across the pile of cloths to find that Holly and Fargo were laying there playing a Dungeon’s and Dragons board game. Having played the Castle Ravenloft game they were involved in, I was thrilled that they didn’t over ham the game or add a bunch of needless “geek speak” to try and make them sound even more nerdy.

For us pen/paper gamers, Holly giving Fargo the D20 dice for luck was an eleven on the geek-cuteness meter!

We should take a moment of silence for Dr. Parrish. He lost the girl, found out she lied to him about role playing, and didn’t make the Astraeus mission. Actually, nah! He had it all coming the arrogant jerk.

This brings me around to Warren Hughes and the return of guest star Wallace Shaw.  I guess if a little goes a long way then a lot of Shaw is…awesome!

Let me clarify right up front:

  • Yes, it was completely ridiculous that Warren got any memories from a zap on his finger from a little coffee spill.
  • Yes, it was a completely transparent method for throwing in some flashback to previous season.
  • Yes, it was a way to cut Shaw loose to let him be as silly and over the top as we have all come to love.
  • And yes, it was the most contrived way for them to get Jack and Allison’s relationship approved by Warren suddenly being close to them afterwards.
  • Even with all that, you know what? This is Eureka; I’m willing to go with it!

It’s nice that Jack and Allison are fully “DoD approved” and now that Jo has grounded herself, we will get to see if Zane follows her example and stays. We won’t have long to wait giving that Astraeus will be launching very soon.

There is no question “Clash of the Titans” is one of a kind episode for Eureka. It was “Tiny,” the rover that was sent ahead to setup a base came for the team on Titan.

TV Fanatic: Okay, so maybe Tiny exploding wasn’t really the first victim of the mission given that she was a robot. But, after having previously possessed emotions and being a protective mother, I think she earned her place on the crew list. Rest in peace, Tiny, your contributions to the mission will not soon be forgotten.

As a Princess Bride fan, I found it inconceivably fun that Wallace Shaw made a guest appearance as Warren Hughes, a visitor from the D.O.D. here to evaluate Jack and Allison’s relationship.

Like Jack, I saw the whole form IA248, (the “Intimate Alliance” Form) as laughable and unnecessary. I didn’t see Warren going the direction of not recommending their relationship. Jack, you have the right idea, you can fix this! For starters, Allison is only the interim GD Director. When she goes back to being the Chief Medical person then you shouldn’t have any problems… right?

Or, better yet, make Warren hang around Eureka for a couple of weeks. I will bet within the span of three weeks he will change his mind about the whole things when he sees what an awesome team you guys make.

Hey, Warren, are you ready for a battle of wits? Do you remember how this turned out last time? Allison is a genius and has spent the last several months building up her tolerance to Iocain powder. This won’t end well for you… again!

I totally didn’t expect to see Jo as the romantic. She really wants to be married, even if she is not conscious of it. But, that’s okay, Zane is coming around and I think she may end up having more on her plate than she expected soon. All it is going to take is Jo and Zane saying goodbye a few more times and it should seal the deal of him staying in Eureka.

Who wants to put odds on Zane doing something to sabotage his parole as a way to stay close to Jo if it looks like he has to leave when he doesn’t want too? I am not much of a gambler, but I would go even money on it.

Have I mentioned how much I adore Holly? For the record, Holly, I like both Star Trek: Next Generation and Star Trek: The Original Series, too.

Her and Fargo’s budding romance is so adorable to watch. Grayson and Day play so well off of each other, they had some of the best banter. I find myself smiling even bigger when they go all geek talk. I’m hard pressed to admit it, but, Holly is actually a better fit for Fargo than the adorably cute Claudia from Warehouse 13.

I know we only have one more season of Eureka, but here is hoping that Felicia Day’s Martin is able to be a full-time character for it. You hear, me Jaime Paglia? If we have to lose our beloved show, can we at least keep a favorite recurring character for what we have left?

Sometimes you don’t realize that you are in trouble until small problems piled up to form one. The same is true for Carter in episode 16 of Eureka season 4 titled “Of Mites and Men.”

TV Fanatic: The builder mites did their job in two ways this week: first, they built the Astraeus’ Hull as designed, but they also worked to tie together several different story elements so that we could watch our favorite Eurekains (Eurekanites?) growing a little more.

While there was nothing unique about Eureka being in a crisis, it was unusual to get a whole lot of forward motion on several storylines at the same time. Now, let’s break what we learned this week:

Allison is ready to go back to work: It’s only been two weeks in Eureka since Beverly brain-jacked Allison and she was chomping at the bit to get back to work. When Senator Wen was so insistent about not letting her return, I wondered if Beverly had gotten her, too. Thankfully, that was a one trick pony and it was just the Senator looking out for GD.

Holly kissed Fargo: I know the Claudia fans out there probably booed when Holly kissed Fargo, but I cheered. I haven’t hidden the fact that I love Felicia Day’s portrayal and I had hoped that she would get to stick around for a long time to come. Seeing the Fargonator and Holly smooching just sealed the deal that much more.

Fargo becoming a real leader: While this Fargo may have gotten to be the head of GD by a wormhole, he’s showing more and more what a great leader he can be. From preventing Zane and himself from dying in space, to helping stop the mites tonight, he was really a top notch boss.

Grace gave ring back to Henry: When Henry came clean about not being “her Henry,” he gave Grace the wedding ring he was wearing. Now, she gave it back so that they can get married. I am so happy that Henry has found the love of his life. After the “Bitter Henry” we dealt with in Season 2 over Kim’s death, I’m psyched he’s out of that dark place.

Zane got a full Pardon: Now that Zane can go anywhere, it appears he has discovered where he most wants to be is in Eureka. As he and Jo get closer and closer, I’m reminded of how much she lost in the beginning of Season 4 when they became strangers again.

Jo passed her test: She’s not just a jar head, once only known for her love of guns and violence. Jo Lupo has evolved into one of the most compelling characters in Eureka. I can’t wait to see where Jo and Zane end up (as long as some place happy).

Be sad if you want, but there are still great episodes yet to be shown in Eureka season 4.

Following news that Syfy simply can’t afford to keep such a budget-heavy show on its schedule, and that Carter and company will say goodbye after season five, the network has at least granted the series an additional episode.

As a result, writers will “have the opportunity to give us and the viewers closure – they’ve been loyal, loyal fans for years,” Erica Cerra told E! News, reportedly breaking into tears during the interview.

Showrunner Jamie Paglia, meanwhile, stands by Syfy.

“They’ve all been amazingly behind us,” he said. “The cancellation was shocking news. I think shocking to even the people involved in making the decisions. We just want to go out on a high note in the most positive way we can.”

Echoes star Colin Ferguson, who wants viewers to understand that there’s still plenty of Eureka to come.

“We have a great season coming up – 17 episodes left to air. Take a moment, get sad if you want to get sad, but there’s some really great work coming. I’m really proud of it. We worked really hard on it. I’d love it if instead of a tone of sadness people could watch it and go out on a tone of joy.”

Girl power really emerges on episode 15 of Eureka season 4 titled “Omega Girls.”

TV Fanatic: It was great to see Zoe (Jordan Hinson) again. I was a little sad that she is now listed as “guest star” during the opening credits. But Zoe really has come a long way since the pilot. She was almost a force of nature, taking out Beverly Barlow’s cronies with no trouble.

I especially loved the second guy. He thought he had outwitted her when she stood up in the main hall, only for Zoe to pulse blast him. She also figured out who had control of Allison just from the speech pattern and word usage.

How awesome was it that Zoe and Jack both could tell Allison wasn’t herself? Sure, we see body snatching, invasions, or possessions in sci-fi all the time. But they are almost always written where nobody notices that the person walked differently, spoke differently, or doesn’t remember anything they should.

And cheers to the Carter family, who each had their own way to tell Barlow was controlling Allison.

Speaking of Barlow; it was good to learn – via off-hand comments made through out the hour – that our femme fatale villain hadn’t been controlling Allison the whole time, as I originally thought she had.

Who wants to place odds that what she stole was the data on the Einstein-Grant bridge device? It seems too coincidental that they have been making worm-hole and time travel comments lately, just as some data gets stolen, for it not to end up being plans for another bridge.

Now, the question is where (or maybe when) do they want to go? What about having someone from the future come back to 2011? This is not a completely unique idea; but it would be fun to see it done with a Eureka flair.

I was glad that Joe and Zoe made up (mostly) at the end. Hey, Zoe, if the doctor thing doesn’t work out, with your gun skills and quick thinking, Jo might need a second-in-charge or partner for GD security.
