Fear not POTC fans! Keith Richards is still in on the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise! IGN.com has more on this news!

Memo to Disney: Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was already an infamous drug user when you cast him in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. But this well known fact — fodder for comedians for years now — is allegedly the reason why the studio is reportedly mulling cutting him from next summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The Drudge Report claims studio execs are worried that Richards’ racy revelations about his drug use in his new memoir, Life, will create a backlash against the fourth installment in their blockbuster franchise. “They very well could end up cutting Keith out of the new movie over this,” suggests Drudge’s source.

Richards played Captain Teague, the pirate father of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Depp based his performance as Sparrow in part on Richards, and was instrumental in him getting cast in the third film. (We’ll see how Depp, the franchise’s indispensable star, takes this news. Maybe a few days of him calling in sick will make the studio reconsider.)

For the sake of conversation, let’s say this rumor is true. Maybe it’s not Richards’ past drug use that’s the reason. Richards was quite effective in his cameo in Pirates 3, but his character is said to have a larger role this time around. Perhaps he simply doesn’t have the acting chops for such an extended role and they need to recast it?

UPDATED, 10/28/10: Disney has addressed the aforementioned rumors via their official POTC Facebook page, saying: “Fear not Pirates fans, we are happy to confirm that Keith Richards will be returning as Captain Teague in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, setting sail May 2011!”
