In this age, we have come so far in terms of technological advances in both for personal and business uses. Ranging from the big, impractical computers, to a seven inch tablet. Hardware specifications have also gone high and are being more cost-effective and smaller in size. For example, back then external storage were very heavy to carry around and it only had 2-20 mb (megabytes)! Now, you can have almost 2 tb (terrabytes) in the palm of your hand, or have more or less 32 gb (gigabytes) of memory in your pocket in the form of flash drives. Mobile computing innovated through the years, especially with the release of tablets. No it’s not the medicine, but they are “mini computers” who have touchscreen monitors as the source of input from the user. Micorsoft was the first to introduce this kind of technology but it did not sell that well. Apple changed the playing field when it released their first tablet, the iPad, which was running on thier own iOS. In response, Google made an open source, java based operating system, which was later called Android, to compete in the market with iOS. Since it was open source, Android was used as an Operating system for their own tablets. This meant that these tablets would be a lot more cheaper than the iPad.

Acer is known for being a PC making company. They are now ranked 4th in that category. Acer would be one of the first companies to launch a tablet at $99 a pop. This tablet could be compared to Amazon.com’s Kindle Fire.

Acer’s $99 tablet has a size of 7 inches, a 1024 x 600 screen resolution, and a 1.2 GHz (giga hertz) core processor. For a price of only $99, almost Php 4000.00, it may be worth it. It runs on the operating system Jellybean, which is Android 4.2. Release date is said to be early 2013.

Brian Barrett at Gizmodo says “This all “sounds great, especially if you’re looking for a minimal investment starter-tablet for your clumsy kid”.

Eva Dou at The Wall Street Journal says “Acer’s pursuit of lower-priced tablets will cut into its margins, but will help it secure a stronger foothold in the rapidly growing China market, said Daiwa Securities analyst Christine Wang.

“Chinese white-box tablet makers are expected to sell some 60 million tablets next year, so it is a really big market,” she said. “None of the major PC brands sells a tablet right now priced to compete with them right now.”
