You thought it is the Korean version but to your surprise no man named Psy was ever spotted. Instead a cute and witty Pinoy named Mikey Bustos was walking, singing and dancing everywhere his Gangnam parody entitled “Opo Pinoy Style.”
What is “Opo Pinoy Style?” It is a hilarious and funny parody made by a Filipino which will definitely become a YouTube favorite. Well, it’s not just your ordinary parody because the lyrics say some facts about the daily life of Filipinos. Some things about the Filipino culture be it a good or a bad. Accordingly, the parody was created to help the Department of Tourism in their campaign “It’s more fun in the Philippines”. So we can say that it is a parody for a purpose. Sounds cool right?
In an interview, Mikey gave us a clue about his next project. He wanted to show more of Filipino culture in a manner that most audience would surely relate and would love to listen to it over and over again. Given the goals that he wanted to achieve, because of the popularity, he chose Gangnam style as the music to use.
Showcasing the Philippines and the culture therein, the video was shot on some of the more famous Philippine landmarks. One of which is the Rizal Park where Mikey and his crew danced the tinikling wearing the traditional costumes. They also have included the disturbing yet funny practice of Pinoys pointing out directions using their lips. Another funny thing that they have added to the video, even though it doesn’t depict the our culture, was the guest starring of Paula Salvosa, well known for her “amalyer” video on social sites such as Facebook. And let us not forget about the balut (a hard boiled duck egg with the under developed duck still inside) since it is a favorite of most Pinoys and one of the best exotic food in the world!
Opo Pinoy Style has once again showed the creativity of Pinoys. Thumbs up for this video especially to Mikey! You never failed to share our culture in the most creative and fun way. Good job Mikey!
