Our critics ask one thing for episode 6 of Body of Proof titled “Society Hill,” do medical examiners really do this much investigation on cases?

TV Fanatic: “Society Hill” threw Megan back into the high society life she had as a top neurosurgeon. It was a life she claimed to loathe but I wonder if that was before or after she lost her career.

Megan accepted her mother’s invitation to a society party so that she could track down a suspect. Megan’s interrogation techniques were not exactly subtle but later she explained to Peter that she was trying to get a picture of Collin’s eyes and she needed him to widen them. Well, yanking out his hair and then accusing him of murder would definitely accomplish that.

Steven Burkett, Daphne’s nervous assistant did such a wonderful job of playing a chronic hair puller that I kept rubbing my head. My scalp was sore just watching him.

I loved Curtis. He didn’t only analyze the bugs. He didn’t just talk to them. Curtis sang to his maggots. Then he told Megan that the squirmy little worm and his entire family were high on aspirin. I found the maggots disgusting but Curtis was adorable.

It looked like Megan believed her Mom cared more about her society friends than about her. Funny how Megan’s daughter Lacey believed her mother’s career as a neurosurgeon was more important to Megan than Lacey. I’m noticing a family pattern here.

Peter inviting Megan out for drinks with the crew was a nice moment.  It was one more small step in Megan becoming a part of the team. Too bad it was interrupted by Mom and a break in the case.

I also enjoyed the song at the end of the show. Maybe by Ingrid Michaelson was both cheery and melancholy enough to fit the moment.

The actual murder by electrocution was an interesting twist and one I didn’t see coming. I was happy to see Bud jump in and read the murderer her rights before she said anything further.  That certainly seemed like something a detective should do.

Episode 6 is just a fine episode. Decent to the point that it is watchable. What do you think?

Episode 5 “Dead Man Walking” is definitely my favorite episode so far. The episode brings back Megan’s demons into play. Kinda exciting huh?

TV Fanatic: The “Dead Man Walking” title could be taken quite literally as patients left the hospital after surgery having no idea that they were internally bleeding to death. Since Megan was once the cause of the death of a patient, she took the hunt for the killer personally. It didn’t seem to matter if it was murder or malpractice, Megan was determined to find the truth.

Having the case visit her old hospital was a great way to visit Megan’s past. “You’d be amazed how many Christmas cards stop coming once you’ve killed a patient on the operating table.”

When Megan performed emergency surgery on the kitchen floor to save George White, it gave me the shivers. Was that a butter or a steak knife? Either way I think I’d invest in a knew set of utensils after that.

I loved Megan’s admission to Peter that she threw up her first time in an O.R. It’s certainly something you would only admit to a friend and it showed her concern for Peter as well as the patient in the midst of a high stress moment.

The last scene was great. Megan knew the one thing she could do that would get that arrogant surgeon’s attention. The one thing that got him to pause when even speaking about his patient’s death didn’t slow him down. She sat on his Porsche.

Again, I missed Detective Morris this week but Ethan and Curtis made up for it. This partnership just keeps getting better and the visual of the two of them in bio-hazard suits was so comical. I look forward to more of these two as the show continues.

Has anyone else noticed how Megan continues to push Curtis to be better and he always steps up and does just that?  Again, it’s the character interaction that sells this show.

It was lovely to see Christina Hendricks in the role of Karen Archer. She and real life husband Geoffrey Arend had a sweet sort of chemistry. It would be wonderful to see her back on the show again.  Perhaps Ethan and Karen’s relationship could continue.

Overall, I love how the staff worked as a team this episode. Kate was also given a bigger role this week and I like that as well. So what can you say about “Dead Man Walking?”

This week’s Body of Proof ”Talking Heads” shows how Megan and the team pieced together the victim’s body parts to uncover the whole story of the crime.

Body of Proof has begun to convince me that autopsies are fascinating. Could the careful examination of a human body really tell you that much about a human life?

Plenty of other shows portray autopsies (CSI, Bones) but Megan Hunt exhibits such awe as she performs one that I find myself compelled to watch the results.  It also helps that I’m not turning my head trying to avoid the grotesque images that frequently accompany the other shows.

I missed Detective Morris this week.  The show lacked his sarcastic wit and his banter with Megan.  We’re just a few episodes into this show and I’ve already been enjoying their chemistry.

I know that Callum owed them money but could the victim’s son-in-law have exuded any more venom?  Talk about strained family ties.  No wonder he dropped out of their lives after borrowing the money and was willing to give his daughter $25,000 to get out of that marriage.

When Irina described cutting up Callum’s body it was with an eerie coldness.  She liked the man and he cared for her.  Yet, once dead he was no longer an asset to her but a problem that needed to be disposed of, literally.  I could only imagine the parts of yourself you’d have to shut down to be able to take a hacksaw to someone you were fond of.

I’m not sure who was more disturbing, Irina or the landlord who swung a hammer at the man’s head and then went on with his day as though nothing had occurred.

When Megan told her team to “hide the gory stuff” from Lacey I had to laugh.  That’s a little hard to accomplish in a morgue.  Seeing the gory stuff was why the twelve year old was there.

I liked the scene where Megan showed Lacey the picture of the hand, then went on to describe who that man was, driving home the point that these were people, not just bodies. When Megan shared her reverence for her work, it brought she and Lacey closer together than anything else could have, even with minimal gore.  The quote over the door stated, “This is where death rejoices to teach the living.”  Perhaps it’s also teaching Megan how to rebuild what’s important in her life.

I like this kind of episode as it really hits my interest. And you? Rate this episode.

After the exciting and character development-rich episodes, Body of Proof returns on April 12 with episode 4 titled “Talking Heads.” This episode features the discovery of severed hand and foot. Thus, Megan and the team will piece these back to identify the victim.

Below is the episode 4 guide of Body of Proof:

When a severed hand and foot turn up in a back alley, Megan and her team must literally piece the victim back together. Meanwhile, Megan’s daughter, Lacey, gets her mother’s reluctant permission to visit her at the office and film her at work as part of a video essay for Social Studies class. What Lacey learns in the process profoundly changes her view of her mother.

Episode 3 of Body of Proof “Helping Hand” gives us more character development. Megan’s acts are simply touching and funny making the episode enjoyable.

TV Fanatic: Elena Rosas was a smart, hard working young woman who helped a lot of people in her short career. Megan was an important influence in her life. Ironically, Megan doesn’t even remember that they’d met.

When Megan has to open the skull of the dead woman before she notices that she was a former patient, her lack of observation and caring for the living finally hits her. She recognizes the work she did on the woman’s brain but not the woman herself. “I can’t remember Elena Rosas as a patient but I can remember her as a surgical procedure?” However awkward, I love that Megan makes an effort to change her behavior.

Curtis isn’t about to make this easy on her. It’s great that he likes her enough to mess with her a little bit, feeding her incorrect information about Ethan. Nothing makes you a part of the team like falling for a well meaning office prank. In the end Megan and Ethan realize that their love of science is what connects them and it is a nice moment between the co-workers, even if there is no Indian food involved.

Again Peter tries to nudge Megan in the right direction by pointing out that Morris is having marital problems. Her clumsy attempts at offering Morris a sympathetic ear turn both sweet and funny.  Neither completely trusts the other but their growing professional respect has the potential to also become a personal friendship. It’s a little surprising how willing Megan is to open up to Morris but she is definitely trying to connect. She’s lost a lot:  her husband, her daughter, her career. Megan is searching for a sense of family and subconsciously hoping to find it here.

Morris’ lines were some of the best this week. As Megan is telling him about the pigeon crap found on the bullet he mutters, “I’m sure this has a point besides utterly grossing me out.” Then when he lays down on the seedy motel room bed in order to role play the victim, he tells his partner, “Remind me to boil myself later.” I was thinking the same thing.

Peter’s story about being a foster kid left me wondering if Megan has any idea about his background and just how these two became partners.

So far, I can say that Body of Proof has mild goriness compared to CSI or even Bones. I like it that way, and I hope the show will maintain such. They don’t really need to show gore medical details to capture our attention as their characters already do so on their own acts.

This week’s special episode of Body of Proof titled “Letting Go” involves heartbreaking stories and plenty of twists which really made the episode unpredictable. What do we mean by this? Read below.

TV Fanatic: When a couple’s shot to death in their car, the theories abound. Was it a murder-suicide or an act of hatred against an interracial couple? Could it have been her arrogant ex-boyfriend or his employer trying to stop him from blowing the whistle?

There were plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout the hour.

Any one of these theories seemed perfectly plausible. The best part was that I really wanted a couple of them to be true. How wonderful would it have been to see Brian, Linda’s bad tempered, control freak of an ex hauled away in cuffs? And the looks that racist Eric Singleton was shooting Detective Baker were positively evil.

In the end the actual murder was both sad and shocking and yet the thought had crossed my mind at the start of the episode. I dismissed it believing that the parents honestly seemed to love their daughter very much. Unfortunately, the father couldn’t let go.

He kept relaying the story of how he taught his daughter to walk again after her accident. It was as though he wanted to keep her as a child who needed him and not a grown woman able to make her own decisions.

When Linda chose to marry a man that Daddy didn’t approve of the results were tragic. Dad said he only wanted to scare David and Linda, that he never intended to hurt anyone. Regrettably, the odds of someone getting hurt increased dramatically when he brought along a loaded weapon. The results were both chilling and heartbreaking.

I also appreciated that Megan and the detectives worked more as a team this time than as adversaries. It showed that Megan could be excellent at her job without going rogue every week.

We got to know more about the cast of characters in Megan’s office and Curtis was the standout. Last week Megan questioned Curtis’ abilities as a doctor. This week, Curtis not only proved her wrong but turned out to be the much needed comic relief delivering some of the best lines of the night.

Visiting Megan’s personal life we found Lacey feeling as though her Mom was suddenly holding on too tight after years of not holding on at all. Lacey felt smothered and Megan didn’t understand her daughter’s need for space.

Peter was correct.  Megan’s brilliant when it comes to reading dead bodies and lousy when it comes to reading the living. Perhaps Megan’s new career has taught her that her tomorrows are limited. Unfortunately, time is what it will take to repair her relationship with her daughter.

This episode of Body of Proof made me want more. Luckily, episode 3 titled “Helping Hand” airs on April 5. I hope the next episode will be good as well.

Episode 2 of Body of Proof titled “Missing” will feature an interracial couple found shot and killed. But there’s a twist, when Dr. Megan Hunt finds new compelling evidence on the bodies the case goes into an entirely different direction. Maybe, they discovered that something’s “Missing” and they found out what it is.

Here are the other events to expect on Episode 2 “Missing”:

When a young, interracial couple is found shot and killed inside their car in Fairmont Park, Dr. Megan Hunt promises the grieving parents that their daughter’s killer will be found.
Detectives Bud Morris and Samantha Baker are ready to chalk the case up to a murder-suicide, but Megan and her team find evidence on the bodies that sends the case in an entirely different and shocking direction.
Peter advises Megan not to push too hard when it comes to reconnecting with her daughter, Lacey.

The second episode will air on Sunday, April 3.

Body of Proof is another promising series. Dana Delany deserves her role and I can’t wait to see her again on next week’s episodes.

TV Fanatic: I’ve been a fan of Delany since her days on China Beach but I haven’t loved her in everything. Where I found her stint on Desperate Housewives ill-conceived and her short lived series Kidnapped virtually unmemorable, Body of Proof gives her a vehicle that can display her considerable talents.

But that doesn’t mean the “Pilot” doesn’t have its flaws. To be honest there isn’t much new here story wise. Megan Hunt is a brilliant loner who needs to rebuild her life and career after a tragic accident alters both, perhaps not completely for the worse.

Why is it that all medical examiners on TV need to be somewhat socially inept and better investigators than the police detectives? It is a concept that goes all the way back to Quincy M. E. and has become a television cliche. It makes this procedural feel average right from the start.

Delany’s Dr. Megan Hunt is brilliant but blunt. She has drive and passion yet her marriage crumbled and her relationship with her daughter is in shambles. As arrogant and confrontational as Megan can be, I still find her more likable than some of her socially awkward lead counterparts (i.e. Bones’ Temperance Brennan or The Mentalist’s Patrick Jane), mostly because Delany sells beleaguered sarcasm better than anyone.

The supporting cast has some serious appeal of its own. Jeri Ryan’s scenes are short as Megan’s supportive but wary boss yet have me anticipating more from her in future episodes. Nicholas Bishop’s Peter Dunlop is Megan’s plucky sidekick. The former police officer turned medical investigator tries to help keep Megan on track both personally and professionally with charming but mixed results.

To its credit, I’ll admit the story kept me guessing about the killer. That is until I saw the wife walk out the door. The set up quickly became so obvious you could have slapped the cuffs on her before she uttered her confession.

Few pilots really hook me but this one does have me looking forward to episode two. Body of Proof showcases a fantastic cast in an entertaining but average procedural. There is lots to like but certainly lots of room to grow.

I’m excited to see the next episode of Body of Proof.
