The Rock n’ Roll night of American Idol is simply enjoyable and remarkable… for some. I mean some finalists really went out of the box and gave us something new while others… well, never mind.

But among all the finalists this evening, my favorites are Pia Toscano and James Durbin.

Pia’s performance of Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High” made it obvious that on this night at least, we were looking at Pia Toscano vs. everyone else.

She didn’t just nail it, as Steven Tyler said. She annihilated it. “Murderer! Murderer! You killed it!” he said. Here’s the performance that outclassed the field:

James Durbin sang the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” while Casey Abrams took Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” What I love about these two guys is that they gave us a calm performance. Meaning they didn’t shout all the time while singing their piece. Surprisingly, the results of their performances are really good.

Others covered pioneers Elvis Presley (Scotty McCreery), Johnny Cash (Paul McDonald), Aretha Franklin (Lauren Alaina) and Michael Jackson (Jacob Lusk).

Haley Reinhart played off her early Janis Joplin comparisons with by covering the rocker’s “Piece of My Heart.” Who do you think is in danger this evening?

Stefano’s performance is a big question mark. Rock n’ roll isn’t just the thing of Jacob. As for Paul, I bet he did a really good job of entertaining the crowd.

So who is your bottom three?
