Google TV

Google TV was developed by Google with Intel, Sony and Logitech. It is a Smart TV platform integrating Google’s Android Operating System and Google’s Google Chrome Browser. What this does is that it creates an interactive overlay on top of already existing Internet Television and WebTV sites.

On October 6, 2010, Google initially launched Google TV  with some devices, integrating the said technology, coming from Sony and Logitech. The first generation of these devices were commercialized by both Logitech and Sony integrating the x86 architecture of  the processors made by Intel.  For the second generation, new partners joined in on the fray, namely LG, Samsung and Vizio. With the new generation, some of the devices included three-dimensional (3D) capabilities. When they have developed the new generation of devices, it no longer integrated the x86 architecture but instead opted to integrate the Advance RISC Machine or the ARM architecture for their processors. Using this kind of approach, the RISC approach, means that the processors that will be built for the devices would only need about 35, 000 resistors compared to the millions used in other conventional and common processors.

Now let’s get into why Google TV is such an innovation in the technology world. We all know that Google created the Android Operating System to compete with the iOS of the very popular Apple products, specifically the iPhone, Mac and iPad devices. The popularity of the Android OS is now sky rocketing. So many tablets and smartphones in the market right now are using this operating system. If iOS and Android are suppose to be medicine, Android would be the “generic” kind. It is cheaper and yet the results would almost be the same with iOS or the “branded medicine”. A lot of programmers are now creating applications and games in the Android platform. Given that, Android is really now competing with the iOS.

Now given that information, you would now have a picture on why Google TV is such an innovation. Much like Sony’s Internet TV, you can browse the Internet through your own television in the comfort of your couch. But what it lacks is variety, Sony’s technology could only do so much unlike Google’s technology. Not only could you browse the Internet, since it has the Android OS in it, you could use all the application and games much like your own tablet or smartphone.

Google TV, because of the Android OS, has Google Play. Google Play might be one of the best feature of the said technology. The user would be able to browse the play store an download the applications and be able to use it in a much, much bigger screen. Imagine playing your favorite Android games in a very big screen, now that is something amazing if you think about it. The user would also be able to watch Youtube videos in their own television. Though some videos does not have a good resolution, this issue is slowly diminishing because of the fact that these videos can now be rendered in a higher resolution. Another interesting feature of it is that you can use your smart phone as a remote controller of the television. Users would be able to access their movies through the Internet. That means netflix, Amazon, HBO GO and many more. Users would also be able to watch live-stream videos or live-stream TV just by using the Internet.

These are just some of the features of Google TV. There are a lot more and the technology is still being developed further for the enjoyment of its users. If you want to be updated and you would want to know more of the features that it has, go to the official blog HERE
